AI STaR Hero Journey

AI-Generated Flower Designs (20 minutes)

Objective:

Students will use technology and artificial intelligence to create their own unique flower designs based on the characteristics they learned about different types of soil.

Materials Needed:

  • Cut-out images of different flower parts (petals, stems, leaves, etc.)
  • Access to a computer or tablet with internet access
  • Optional: AI-powered design tool (if available)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (2 minutes): Briefly recap what the students learned about soil textures and how they affect plant growth. Explain that they will now have the opportunity to create their own unique flowers using technology.

  2. Demonstration (3 minutes): Show students how to use cut-out images of flower parts to create a flower. If available, introduce them to an AI-powered design tool that can help generate flower designs based on their preferences.

  3. Activity (10 minutes):

    • Provide students with a variety of cut-out images of flower parts (petals, stems, leaves, etc.).
    • Encourage them to use these images to create their own unique flower designs. They can mix and match different parts to experiment with different combinations.
    • For students who are interested, introduce them to an AI design tool where they can input preferences and receive AI-generated flower designs.
  4. Share and Discuss (5 minutes):

    • Allow students to share their flower designs with the class. Encourage them to explain why they chose certain elements and how it relates to soil characteristics.
    • Discuss as a class how the flower designs reflect what they learned about soil textures and characteristics.

Assessment:

  • Evaluate student participation and their ability to explain their design choices based on soil characteristics.

TEKS:

  • Science (Grade 3-5):

    • 3.7.A: Observe and describe how different environments, including microhabitats in schoolyard and local environments, support different varieties of organisms.
    • 4.7.A: Observe and describe the role of ecological succession in an ecosystem.
    • 5.7.C: Explore the characteristics of natural resources that make them useful in products and materials.
  • Technology Applications (Grade 3-5):

    • 3-5.1.A: Create original products using a variety of resources.
    • 3-5.1.C: Identify and use a variety of types of input technologies such as keyboard, mouse, touch screen, remote control, microphone.

This extension activity aligns with TEKS in both Science and Technology Applications, encouraging students to apply their understanding of soil characteristics in a creative and technological context. It also promotes the use of technology as a tool for creating original products.
